JAMES - 6 years old, 55 pounds. Shy/reserved. Afraid of men, can be skittish with quick movement/loud noises. No other pets or young children.
James is a scared boy, and rightly so. He was abandoned by his owner, and then was in a situation where negative reinforcement training was employed. He then landed at VBACAC as a confused and shut down dog. But as he gets used to the faces he sees regularly, he has started to come out of his shell.
Underneath that nervous outer layer is a goofy, sweet boy! He is a decent size, sports a deep copper color, a cute underbite, and expressive brown eyes. When out in the yard with a familiar face, he shows that he is responsive to treats/food, and likes playing with toys! Throw a toy over his head, and he'll jump in the air before he realizes he can't reach it. Then he'll turn around and run after it. He loves to chase, but doesn't always bring the toy back, so it is good to have a couple toys handy to keep him engaged.
James is slow to warm-up to new people. Potential adopters should be prepared to have a prolonged meet and greet with James before he will approach them. He may require more than one meet and greet. It will also take time for James to get used to a whole new home and family. He will need his own safe space in your house that he can retreat to when scared. As he gets used to a new environment, he will come to you when he is comfortable. He would do better in a home that doesn't have frequent visitors as this is likely to cause him some stress. He is afraid of men. Small kids will also likely scare him as they can be loud and move too fast for his liking.
